Cold Showers Are Healthy

By Drew Hayes

Thankfully–because you may need one depending on the election results! As it turns out turning down the temperature in your morning routine might just keep you out of the doctor’s office.

A new study from the University of Basel reveals that taking a daily cold shower can cut your sick days by nearly one-third. Researchers tracked over 700 healthy adults for twelve weeks. They found those who braced the cold missed 31 % fewer workdays due to illness. They also reported feeling sharper, more alert, and highly energized.

And the benefits aren’t just physical. For the environmental crazies, shorter, colder showers cut individual carbon emissions–a smaller carbon footprint–by about fifteen kilograms (15 kg × 2.20462 = 33.07 lbs) over the course of the study—the environmental equivalent of driving one hundred kilometers (approximately 62.14 miles–the study doesn’t account for LA miles in traffic!)

Don’t go freezing your you-know-what off all at once. Experts say you don’t need to freeze immediately. Slowly lowering the temperature at the end of your usual warm shower still delivers a powerful health and environmental boost. Then you can count on the gas or power company to raise your rates because you are not using enough to heat your water.
