LAUSD Investigation Reveals Teachers Created Hostile Environment for Jewish, Israeli Students

By Jeff Vaughn

Three Canoga Park High School teachers violated civil rights protections by creating a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students, according to an LAUSD investigation reported by Hoodline.

Canoga Park High School January 2017

Investigators substantiated all eleven allegations, finding teachers used classroom lessons and school activities to promote one-sided political messaging about Israel and Gaza and recruit students for Students for Justice in Palestine.

Investigators found a dance teacher pulled 49 students from class for a club meeting and offered community-service hours for attending a Gaza fundraiser at her church.

A graded final exam required students to review a dance-recital playlist that included material portraying Gazans as martyrs.

Another teacher used classroom flyers declaring “Israel kills! USA pays!!” Investigators found those materials were reposted after being removed.

The district ordered materials removed, tighter supervision of club activities and civil rights training for staff.

Investigators said criticism of Israel alone wasn’t the violation — repeatedly using classroom authority to push political advocacy crossed the line.

LAUSD declined to disclose personnel details, citing confidentiality.
