As the city of LA seems to have given up looking for criminals stealing copper wire from city utilities, the Sheriff in Ventura County had made an arrest. As LA residents in June, roundly rejected a special assessment to replace non-working street lights–many rendered useless due to copper wire theft–and lights remain dark, rather than stay in the dark, Ventura County takes action.
KTLA.com reports: “The thefts occurred between March and July in unincorporated areas of Ventura County, where investigators say critical communication lines were repeatedly targeted for their copper wiring. According to authorities, the thefts damaged telephone, internet and emergency communication systems relied upon by residents and first responders. Officials said such disruptions can delay emergency reports, interfere with communication between dispatchers and responding personnel and increase response times during critical incidents”.
