Los Angeles Unified School Districts students head back to class today — but for many, the school day will include a lot less screen time.
Under a new policy approved in June, digital devices are essentially eliminated for early education through first grade, except for limited circumstances.
Across all grades, LAUSD will also block student access to YouTube, social media and streaming platforms unless a teacher approves it.
And students will no longer automatically get devices to take home — although families can request them.
Teachers are also being encouraged to assign more old-school homework: reading, writing, problem-solving and hands-on activities that don’t require a screen.
The district says it’s trying to find a healthier balance between technology and traditional learning after screen use exploded during COVID.
