The collective McClatchy Media California editorial boards have officially endorsed Republican Herb Morgan over incumbent Democrat Malia Cohen for California State Controller. Morgan is part of Steve Hilton’s “Golden Ticket” of candidates for statewide office. This major cross-party nod marks the second consecutive time the board has backed a Republican for this specific seat, having previously endorsed Republican Lanhee Chen in 2022.
The board, representing papers like The Sacramento Bee and The Fresno Bee, praised Morgan’s deep Wall Street background and his ambitious “Radical Transparency” platform. They also sharply criticized Cohen’s uninspiring reelection bid and her refusal to participate in an endorsement interview. With this decisive backing, Morgan’s financial reform message gains vital momentum heading into the highly competitive November election.
The McClatchy Newspapers which tend to lean to the left politically, include: The Sacramento Bee (Sacramento) — The flagship paper founded in 1857, The Fresno Bee (Fresno), The Modesto Bee (Modesto), Merced Sun-Star (Merced) and The Tribune (San Luis Obispo).
