A new poll shows the race for California governor tightening — but there’s an important caveat: the poll was commissioned by Republican Steve Hilton’s campaign.
The David Wolfson survey, conducted October first and second among 1,020 California voters, has Democrat Xavier Becerra at 45.7 percent and Hilton at 40.1 percent — a 5.6-point gap. Another 14.1 percent remain undecided.
That’s a big change from an earlier Hilton-commissioned Wolfson poll that had Becerra ahead 52 to 37 — a 15-point advantage. The margin between the candidates has narrowed by 9.4 points between those two campaign polls.
But other polling has shown a substantially different race, so this shouldn’t be treated as confirmation that the contest overall has narrowed to six points.
Still, with the November third election less than a month away, this poll puts one number in focus: 14 percent say they still haven’t picked a candidate.
