Pan picks his press: Tough questions need not apply

By Jeff Vaughn

Want access to a Democrat? Don’t ask tough questions.

Capitol Press Blockade

Democrat Richard Pan is running for Congress against Kevin Kiley in California’s newly redrawn 6th Congressional District.

Pan held an event with Kamala Harris over the weekend — but KCRA wasn’t invited.

Reporter Ashley Zavala has a reputation for persistent questioning of California politicians. The compliant Sacramento Bee, Los Angeles Times and two other Sacramento television stations were allowed inside.

And there’s some political irony here.

Days earlier, Democrats criticized President Trump after his administration took White House access away from CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

Democrat Pan and Republican-turned-independent Kiley face off in a race that could help determine control of the U.S. House.

And if the House balance comes down to this district, Pan could end up holding an enormously consequential vote.

Which makes scrutiny part of the job — including questions from reporters a candidate might rather not answer.
