Think nobody is watching when you light illegal fireworks? Think again.
The City of La Habra is expanding its use of drones to crack down on illegal fireworks. Police say the drones can pinpoint where fireworks are launched, record video evidence and help officers issue citations without having to chase suspects through neighborhoods. As a result, the department issued numerous citations, and several arrests were made for fireworks violations over the Independence Day holiday week.
The department said the drones also broadcast public safety announcements in both English and Spanish, reminding residents that fireworks are illegal in La Habra.
Violators face hefty fines, and officials say the technology is designed to improve public safety while reducing the risk to officers. So, if you’re planning to light up the sky, don’t be surprised if a drone is watching first. The department reports illegal fireworks enforcement will occur through the summer months.
