No To Boys In Girls Sports, Even With Blue Tsunami

By Drew Hayes

Even as Democrats celebrated election victories Tuesday, voters in four states passed measures restricting transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

In Nebraska, the measure passed with approximately 68 percent support.

Arizona voters also approved restrictions, with nearly 59 percent voting yes.

In traditionally Democratic Washington state, voters approved Initiative 638 with approximately 57 percent support, according to the Associated Press.

And in Colorado, Proposition 134 gained roughly 52 percent of the vote, and the AP has called the race, pending final certification.

Supporters say the measures protect fairness and opportunities for female athletes. Opponents argue they discriminate against transgender students.

The results suggest broad support for sex-based sports restrictions extends beyond traditionally Republican states, even in an election otherwise favorable to Democrats.
