Who Thinks It’s A Good Idea To Bring Grizzly Bears Back To California?

By Drew Hayes

State Senator Laura Richardson, who represents Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, and portions of Long Beach and Torrance, that’s who. She must not be very busy–she offered a bill to, get this, bring grizzly bears back to Cali. Surely she doesn’t want Grizzly Bears there.

NBC4 reports: “Two Native American tribes cosponsored the bill, and several animal welfare and environmental groups supported it. They argued that bringing the second largest land predator back to America’s most populated state would right an ecological wrong and help restore California’s degraded ecosystem”. Right an ecological wrong? In an unusual moment of sanity for the pols, they also report the bill has been spiked.

Senate bill 1305 states: “This bill would require the department to develop and make publicly available a roadmap that evaluates whether, and under what conditions, reintroduction of the grizzly bear is feasible and advisable, and the extent to which the ecological functions once provided by the grizzly bear may be restored through human-mediated landscape restoration, including through reintroduction of the species.”

Grizzly Bears roamed the wild in California–that’s why they are on the state flag–before the Gold Rush. Apparently there is no pressing business to rush in Sacramento, so they have time to consider this kind of needless legislation. Roar.
