House Ethics Committee Investigating L.A. Rep. Jimmy Gomez

By Drew Hayes

The House Ethics Committee has confirmed that it is investigating Los Angeles Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez over allegations of sexual misconduct, including alleged “inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer.”

Gomez acknowledged making “personal mistakes outside my marriage,” but said his conduct was consensual and violated neither the law nor House ethics rules. In a statement reported by CBS News, Gomez apologized to his wife, family and constituents and promised to cooperate fully with the investigation.

The allegations surfaced after reports that Gomez was seen kissing a younger congressional aide at a 2023 gathering. The aide reportedly worked for another member of Congress. The committee has not disclosed whether its investigation involves only that incident or additional allegations, and it emphasized that opening an investigation does not establish that a violation occurred.

Gomez has long been part of the same close congressional circle as former Rep. Eric Swalwell, whose gubernatorial campaign he co-chaired, and Sen. Ruben Gallego, his former Washington roommate; all three were also members of the Congressional Dads Caucus founded by Gomez

Gomez has represented California’s 34th Congressional District since 2017 and is seeking a sixth term. The heavily Democratic district includes Downtown Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Koreatown, Eagle Rock and Highland Park.

This is a developing story.
