Here’s A Hack To Get Out Of Jury Duty: Turn 80

By Drew Hayes

Ok, so here is something you have to look forward to in your golden years. At 80, you can get out of jury duty.

California law allows residents aged 80 and older to obtain a permanent medical exemption from jury service without needing a doctor’s note or medical documentation. CalMatters reports that the new law rolls out Jan 1, 2028. This all comes to be because Assembly Bill 1359 was signed into law.

Here is the scam, uh, protocol to beat jury service:

  • No Doctor’s Note Required: Seniors 80 and older can request a permanent excuse due to an incapacitating impairment by attesting to it themselves, removing the old requirement for a healthcare provider’s signed letter or memo.
  • One-Time Request: Eligible residents can submit a single request to be permanently removed from future jury pools.
  • Still Voluntary: Older adults who are willing and able to serve can still choose to participate in jury duty if they want to.
  • Opting Back In: Anyone who takes the exemption but later changes their mind is allowed to opt back in.

Live a little. Enjoy your 80’s jury-duty-free.
