The train that was supposed to end LAX traffic headaches is now nearly four years behind schedule and almost $900 million over budget. Think of it as California’s high speed Rail light, but with the same bloated budget.
The LAX Automated People Mover was originally expected to open in 2023. Instead, the price tag has climbed to about $3.34 billion—roughly $880 million more than planned—and officials are now aiming for an October 6 opening. Before that can happen, the system must complete 30 consecutive days of successful testing.
Once it opens, the driverless train will connect airport terminals with Metro rail, parking and the rental car center. But with the World Cup already underway and the Olympics just two years away, critics say Los Angeles can’t afford any more delays.
