Powerful waves are eating away at the coastline near Zuma Beach, threatening The Sunset Restaurant and the road leading to it.

The erosion has become so severe that portions of Westward Beach Road are collapsing, exposing a Los Angeles County water main and forcing emergency road closures.

Water service to The Sunset Restaurant and nearby homes has been shut off.

Now construction crews are racing against the tides, dumping massive boulders along the shoreline in hopes of stopping further destruction.

And the timing couldn’t be worse.

Southern California is entering another potentially stormy period, with already weakened coastal roads and beaches vulnerable to additional pounding surf.

The Sunset, a longtime Malibu dining destination known for its spectacular ocean views, now faces an uncertain future.

Officials are monitoring the damage and haven’t announced when the road will reopen.

The restaurant that built its reputation on being right at the water’s edge is now confronting the danger of the water getting too close.
