Mourning The Passing Of Breaking Bad Star, RJ Mitte

By Drew Hayes

You know him as Flynn, Walter White’s son in the landmark TV series Breaking Bad, but Mitte was so much more, using his platform on the show to raise the profile of the disabled community as an advocate and activist. A breakthrough star on a breakthrough show.

Mitte passed away Monday in Brownsville, Texas, at the age of 34. An autopsy is planned, though authorities have not yet released a cause of death.

Mitte spent five critically acclaimed seasons starring as Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the courageous son of Bryan Cranston’s character on the landmark AMC drama. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 3, Mitte drew directly from his own life to bring profound authenticity to the role.

His representative, Sean Riley, noted that Mitte used his platform to challenge stereotypes, promote genuine inclusion, and advocate for actors with disabilities. Along with winning a Screen Actors Guild Award for the show’s final season, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s.

The statement from Mitte’s representative via Forbes:

“It is with profound sadness we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte. RJ Mitte was best known for his role as Walter ‘Flynn’ White Jr. on AMC’s critically acclaimed, award-winning series Breaking Bad. Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion. Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.”
