By Jeff Vaughn Los Angeles is cracking down on a growing street-party trend: getting high by inhaling nitrous oxide.
The City Council voted unanimously to ban smoke shops and cannabis retailers from selling the gas, commonly called “whippets.”
The crackdown follows an incident at downtown’s Orpheum Theatre, where crowds gathered with tanks of laughing gas and balloons.
Health officials warn the gas can cause brain damage, paralysis and even death.
The ordinance now needs Mayor Karen Bass’ approval or veto.
